This post will be a quickie and cover the ‘big’ aspect of the year: Saturn’s last quarter square aspects to Uranus.
I wasn’t going to write about this, because it’s just one aspect and plenty of other astrologers are covering it. But, as Saturn made the first exact contact on Feb 17, I noticed that myself as well as pretty much everyone else I talked to—client or otherwise—was really feeling the energy and struggling with it.
Saturn is now in Aquarius for the next two and a half years. He brings his slow, steady, granular, and grinding energy to the themes that Aquarius rules: freedom, technology, exploration, the tribe/collective … and shadow themes of trauma, fixed ideologies, and repression of new ideas because of trauma or fixed ideologies. Before the discovery of Uranus, Saturn ruled Aquarius.
Uranus, the modern ruler of Aquarius, is in Taurus. This planet’s unpredictable, fast-moving, and electrifying energy doesn’t mix that well with the steady, change-averse, earth vibes of Taurus. The transit of Uranus through Taurus (a 14 year cycle) will bring disruption to our literal earth, but also how we all survive and relate to a changing planet and changing collective values and realities.
The square aspect (90 degrees) between them indicates stress and tension. With squares, we have to learn how to work with and blend inharmonious energies. Usually there’s a lot of learning, compromise, and struggle involved. This is where the big lessons are integrated.
The fact that this square aspect is last quarter (meaning that Saturn, as the faster moving planet, is coming up ‘behind’ Uranus, or is at 270 degrees in relation to Uranus’ position) indicates that the nature of the tension will be a crisis in consciousness and belief.
The aspect is exact on 2/17/21, 6/14/21, and 12/24/21. This is when it will feel strongest, although honestly, the aspect will be active all year.
We can expect the theme of the transit for ourselves to be revealed at the first exact point, where hopefully we will take some steps toward understanding and integrating the theme. As we move toward the second exact hit (during Saturn’s retrograde), we will begin to reflect on what hasn’t served us and begin to digest or discard old patterns and beliefs. By the end of the transit at the third hit, in December, we will experience some degree of resolution and integration.
You will know what is up for you; house positions of the transiting planets may help narrow this down, but hey, you know when you are in your personal trenches. The best thing to do with difficult transits is to not resist what wants to fall away, and not exit the building—via Netflix, drugs, or any other addictive behavior. That includes addiction to your technology, folks (a shadow Uranus/Aquarius thing).
What to Do
We are being asked to recalibrate our relationship to our personal and collective traumas and the consequent beliefs that keep us from moving forward as individuals and as a society. We are being challenged to understand and accept that we do not control the universe. We are being tasked with deconstructing our beliefs and allowing new, more inclusive, and more grown-up ideas to take their place.
When we come face to face with our triggers—be they present or past life—we can get stuck in a loop of pain, evidence gathering, and destructive behavior (towards self or others). To meet trauma, we’ve got to engage in trauma resolution. I am absolutely not an expert in this, so I don’t offer advice, but there are good resources out there. If you need support, get it. Saturn wants us to face our terrors and stuck places, but not alone. This transit is a perfect opportunity to do some epic healing, but we must get the appropriate level of help or risk being re-traumatized.
Everyone is in a unique place with their development and healing journey. If you are okay, then turn your gaze outward to how you can participate in change on a societal level. If you are dealing with intense emotions, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and so on, put your own oxygen mask on first.
My favorite resources for supporting myself (outside of professional assistance) are:
- Emotional Freedom Technique ( aka EFT, or ‘tapping’)
- Energy healing (contact me about my approach or I love the work of my friend and colleague Sita)
- Sound bathing (great opportunities on the Insight app)
- Flower essences (FES is a company I like)
- Resourcing (for me this looks like aromatherapy at home, quality time in nature, creative play, minimal screen time, less caffeine): find what soothes your nervous system and your physical body.
Ultimately, the key goal of this transit is freedom from fear WITH mature growth and responsibility. Because the definition of insanity (as a good friend likes to tell me) is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Now is the time to break patterns of ‘insanity’ and map new neural networks. It doesn’t matter how old you are or how entrenched the patterns: the planets support your growth and change.
Byron Katie (and others, I’m sure) says that ‘things don’t happen to us, but for us.’ This can be hard to take when things seem bleak. As a species, the current transits are here to wake us up so that both we and our planet may survive. For individuals, the goal of the planets is always more peace, love, connection, and remembrance of who we are at soul level.
