If you know me at all, you know I eschew the word psychic. I mean, it just makes me feel … a little schlocky. I’ve tried intuitive as a substitute, but that leads to confusion—because people think that intuition and psychic-ness are two different things. But really, they are the same, like two sides of the same coin.
I bring up this point, which to some may be a matter of semantics, because it is a very frequently asked question/matter of misunderstanding. As in, “do I have to be psychic to read Tarot?” or “if I was psychic like you, I could …”
Here’s the thing: psychic ability is really just intuition that has been practiced and developed.
We all have intuition. It’s the knowing who is on the phone before you answer, the hunch that plays out, the gut instinct to turn left instead of right. We can choose to act or not on our intuition—free will, y’all—but it is something we receive, often without asking or looking.
Psychic ability comes when you practice one of the “clairs” (clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience, or claircognizance) through exercises, meditation, or specific practice like remote viewing. I like to think of it as the conscious application of the intuitive faculty. You direct your vision. You open your hearing. You access your empathic heart.
Psychic-ness does appear supernatural at times, but mostly because the majority of humans pay no attention to this aspect of themselves. Like we can all learn to play a musical instrument, but mostly don’t … and are wowed by those amazing musicians. Of course, just like with music, people do have natural tendencies and gifts. But we can all learn.
How Can I Develop My Intuition?
There are loads of ways to develop your clairs, or intuition. The main one is to pay attention!
Notice how those hunches and insightful flashes tend to come: is it through dreams or seeing something in your mind’s eye, or even seeing lights, auras, or images with your “outer” eye? Then you are naturally inclined towards clairvoyance, and practicing art, working with Tarot cards, mandalas, or other visual mediums will help you grow.
If intuition seems like a voice inside your head, clairaudience might be your strength, and you can work with music, gestalt, channelling, or auto-hypnosis as ways to practice.
Clairsentience is the way of most self-styled “empaths”–if you tend to feel others’ feelings or get literal “gut” instincts, then physical practices like yoga or dance may tune your instrument.
You get the idea. Claircognizance is more subtle–direct knowing–and usually the last that gets trusted and developed. It’s my main go-to now, though I use the others too.
I have spent years and years and years cultivating spiritual growth, communication with guides, working in the metaphysical arts. I am way more psychic now than I was 20 years ago. I can only recommend that you find a path that excites and inspires you: art, creative expression, metaphysics, meditation, etc. … And practice it. Journal about your contemplation or meditation experiences. Ask for guidance. Find ways to meet your guides.
I learn from doing and from books, so here are my favorites:
- How To Read the Akashic Records by Linda Howe
- Essential Psychic Healing by Diane Steen
- Anything by Barbara Brennan
- Wheels of Light by Rosalyn Bruyere
- Ann Moura’s Green Witch series
In addition, I find my intuition expands during the creative dance practice I do, and I am made more peaceful and clear by my yin yoga practice. Again, you have to find the ways that allow you to access a different brainwave, to get into “flow,” and then practice! Just like with getting good at anything, you have to want it.
Will a Reading Help me Access My Intuition?
This has been a real question from folks, and my answer is … maybe. I mean, I’m not going to pass on a kind of shaktipat and all of a sudden you are seeing auras. But a reading can help you decipher the ways you might more successfully access intuition, or what might be blocking it (if you’ve been working on it but can’t seem to find your groove). Also of course you can meet your guides, in the Spirit Guide reading.
